Having a yard double is always enjoyable and today’s was a reflection of the hard work put in by the team at Down Farm over the Christmas period.
Doctor Dex kick-started proceedings in the maiden hurdle at Wetherby in just his second start over hurdles. He finished a decent second on debut at Musselburgh in December and improved again today, showing a gutsy display to fend off challengers with more experience. Doctor Dex, or Joey as he is known in the yard, was ridden by Johnny Burke and owned by the Crossed Fingers Partnership.
Zoutoise completed the double with a bookend of wins on the card at Wetherby in the Junior Fillies’ Bumper. Her chance on paper looked promising as she is a half-sister to the classy, Whisper. Zoutoise showed a great level of maturity on her racecourse debut and dealt with conditions very well. Her jockey, Ciaran Gethings, wanted to prompt her with a bit of education over the final furlong and was impressed with the way she quickened. It was a fine win for her owner Patrick Atkinson.
Baby King ran an equally valiant race to finish third at Warwick in the Edward Courage Cup Handicap Chase under Paddy Brennan. On ground that was far quicker than he had previously won on, Baby jumped fluently and was just held after the last fence. We are very pleased he ran well for his owners, Vicki Robinson and James Williams.
